Party Planning

  • General Party Planning Schedule
  • If you're having your party at a rented venue, be sure to make your reservation well in advance!
  • Order your party supplies. If invitations are part of the order, allow at least six weeks for standard invitations, longer for custom.
  • For wedding reception cakes, decide on the kind of wedding cake(s) you will have. Visit bakeries to taste samples, and to see the quality of their work.
  • For bridal parties and showers, and bachelorette parties, cakes are less formal, and can be either professionally made or home-made. For standard and raunchy bachelorette party and cake supplies, visit Bachelorette.com (Save 10% when you use coupon code CJ10.)
  • Other services to order well in advance, if you will be using them, include catering, live band or dj, flowers, and a photographer.

Party Decorations

  • Click the banner at the top of the page for standard wedding party decorations.
  • For wedding arches and other large decorations, plus party supplies, visit Shindigz.
  • Bohemian Court is a cool non-traditional theme for weddings, showers, or bachelorette parties!
  • For a party on a budget, use a plain white tablecloth covered with white lace tablecloth of the same size or smaller. Use helium-filled white and pearly white balloons, with white ribbons. For a bachelorette party, use pink and black, or whatever colors coordinate with your partyware.
  • Use photos of the couple to create wall decor, grouping smaller photos together for impact, and adding a text description beneath each for additional interest. Event, location and date, or a more elaborate description is fine.

Party Invitations

  • If you're ordering party invitations, allow six weeks for order processing, delivery, invitation preparation and mailing in time to arrive at least two weeks before the party. Custom invitations will take more processing time, so keep that in mind.
  • Purchase wedding stamps at your local post ofice, or order online. There's a pretty 41 cent stamp for weddings.
  • You can also design your own postage! Visit Stamps.com for more information or to order.
  • Use our generic invitation templates as a basis for making your own wedding or shower invitations. Add wedding graphics such as pairs of bells, doves, or rings, or a photo of the bride or bride and groom. Print on card stock or textured invitation paper.

Party Food

  • If you're having the party catered, set this up well in advance. If not, consider party trays from a local grocer, deli, or gourmet shop.
  • It's nice to include something for vegetarians and vegans, too: hummus as dip for veggies or chips, small falafel balls served with toothpics, etc.
  • See our pages of cocktail party appetizers and party recipes.
  • Cake! You'll find a good selection of wedding cake toppers at That's My Topper!

Party Activities

  • Pin the veil on the bride.
  • Play trivia. See how well the guests know the bride, or bride and groom. Questions can include when, how, and where they met; did anyone introduce them; if so, who; who popped the question; where; how; do they want to have children; how many; which gender(s); can she cook; can he fix things; and so on. For a bachelorette party, as questions according to the tone of your party.
  • Musical chairs, using wedding music.
  • Place disposable cameras on the table(s) for informal shots of the party. Collect them at the end of the party. Or if several people have digital cameras, ask them to email you the best pictures.
