Make your luau memorable with these ideas and party planning tips.

Luau Party Food

  • Pineapple and fruit salad are always appropriate for a luau party.
  • Cut a watermelon in half lengthwise, and hollow out to use as a serving bowl for fruit salad or watermelon cubes.
  • Roast pork is an authentic hawaiian luau food. You'll find great recipes for this and other dishes at AlohaFriendsLuau.com.
  • For simpler, more American-style food to go with your luau theme, you can't beat barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, baked beans, chips, etc.
  • Coconut topping on a cake is very tropical looking; so is pineapple upside-down cake!
  • The palm tree cake pan at The Party Works is ideal for a luau. They also have a pineapple shaped cake pan.
  • Try our simply delicious party punch recipe.
  • Serve drinks in plastic coconut cups.
  • Add paper umbrellas to drinks for tropical flair, or use brightly colored straws.

Luau Party Ideas

  • Luau music makes the party lively! If you don't already own any Hawaiian or luau music, you can order Luau CDs online.
  • Greet each guest with a lei.
  • Make your own party invitations. Use blue or green card stock, flattened bits of silk flowers and/or raffia, pictures from online or magazines, etc. Cut the paper to fit a standard envelope, or find envelopes the size you want before making the invitations. Print the inside/information side of the invitation using your computer and printer. If you aren't handy with a word processor or layout program, just do one by hand, filling in all the info, then scan and print the rest of the invitations or have them copied at a print shop. Depending on your design, you can get one (four-fold regular weight colored paper, two (single fold card stock) or four (postcard-style on card stock*) invitations from a page. Be sure to print a test copy before you run off a bunch! *For postcard-style invitations, print the backs, 4 to a page; decorate the other side, mail in an envelope.
  • Use a little coconut tanning oil in potpourri for a tropical scent.

Luau Party Activities

  • Limbo is a traditional luau activity. All you need is a bamboo pole, and two people to hold the ends!
  • Hire authentic Hawaiian musicians and hula dancers, or recruit volunteers before the party.
  • Hula hoops are colorful, inexpensive fun.
  • Get a tiki pinata for decor and party excitement!

Luau Decorating Ideas

  • Got a patio table with an umbrella? Get an umbrella cover to transform it!
  • Use a brightly colored sheet as a tablecloth on the food table.
  • Put raffia skirting around the food table.
  • Tiki torches set the atmosphere for nighttime parties. If insects are a problem in your area, be sure to get torch fuel with Citronella.
  • Decorate a tree as a tiki totem pole.
  • Use string lights in trees or between poles to create a lively party atmosphere. (If you use extension cords, secure them well or run them through a no-traffic area.)
