Ghost Decorations
Ideas for making ghost decorations for a Halloween party or for Halloween decor for your home.
Hanging Ghosts
- You'll need some large white plastic bags, as many bags as you want ghosts, plus extras for stuffing.
- Loosely wad up some more white plastic bags, and put them at the bottom of each ghost bag. (The bottom will become the head.)
- Loosely tie a piece of white string just below the head. Make big eyes with a black marker. You may find it easier to make the eyes before you stuff the head - just stuff it temporarily so you can see where the eyes should go.
- Tie some string to the top and hang it from a tree branch (outside), or the ceiling, a wall, a curtain rod, or a doorway (inside).
- For sturdier ghosts, use white sheets, and stuff the heads with newspaper.
Table-top Ghosts
- Get some cheesecloth and stiffener at a craft store.
- Lay out some plastic or several sheets of newspaper on your work area.
- Cut the several layers of cheesecloth to the desired size, mix the stiffener according to package directions.
- Using a long, thin dowel inserted into the center of a styrofoam ball, drape the cheesecloth layers which have been wetted in the stiffener, over the styrofoam ball / dowel, standing upright (head up).
- You'll want the cheesecloth to drape on the table some - this will be the "feet" the ghost will stand on.
- Do not move your ghosts until the stiffener has dried.
- Make as many as you like!
Table-top Treat Ghosts
- These ghosts are simple, inexpensive, and a real treat!
- Take Tootsie Pops or similar suckers, place a kleenex or square of thin white cloth over the top.
- Tie around the "neck" with a half piece of white pipe cleaner, thread, a small piece of white twist tie - or just use tape.
- Lay them on the table or stand them up in a clear container. Or stick them in a large styrofoam ball, cut in half, spray painted black or orange, and glued with regular school glue, cut side down, to a plate (or the back of a plate). Soak plate later to remove styrofoam and glue. Another idea is to stick them in large clumps of black or orange modeling clay, pressed onto a platter.
Wall-decoration Ghosts
- On white poster board, sketch your ghosts in pencil.
- Once you're satisfied with your sketches, go over the outline and eyes with a black marker.
- Cut out just outside the outline and tape or pin to a wall. (The tacky stuff you can buy for posters works too, but it can sometimes leave an oily spot on your paint!)
- Make three or five ghosts, in different sizes, and group them together for a better effect. If they're in a corner, put three on one wall, two on the other.
