Fifties party

Start your preparations by ordering Fifties party supplies at AHappyTime.MakesParties where you'll find a vast array of 50's partyware and decorations, like those shown above. If you're looking for really large decor, such as for a prom, visit Shindigz.com.

Fifties Party Planning

  • Decide on the theme of your 50's retro party: will it be a sock hop? a diner? soda shop? and ice cream parlor? a beatnik lounge? 50's jazz club? piano bar or cocktail party? science fiction retro? retro-futuristic?
  • You could even base your party on your favorite 50's song! Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star"; a romantic evening cocktail party based on The Patters' "Twilight Time"; a Tammy party, based on the Debbie Reynolds song and movie; Jim Lowe's "Green Door"; so many possibilities come to mind! (StinaLisa.com has a great list of 50's music hits, by year, with sound clips for all the songs we just mentioned.)

50's Party Decorations

  • If your home and furnishings aren't mid-century, don't worry, you can still create a great 50's atmosphere--just take a look at all the 50's party theme decorations at Shindigz for supplies or ideas! Neato!
  • See our page of Fifties Party Decorations for examples of using fifties 45s and album covers as party decorations for a Sock Hop, Cocktail Party, or other 50's party.

Retro Party Food

What you serve depends, in part, on the theme of your party (see suggestions in the Party Planning section, above.) Hamburgers and hot dogs on the barbecue, fries or chips and coleslaw on the side, were all popular in the 50's, and will go with most party themes. (You'll want swanky appetizers if you're having a cocktail party.)

So, aside from the usual, here are some specific ideas:

  • Sock hop: "Poodle puffs" (Planters Cheez Mania White Cheddar Puffed Cheese Balls), root beer floats,
  • Soda shop: Burgers, malts, sodas (naturally), ice cream floats, fruit pie (displayed on a pie/cake stand with a glass dome...on most models if you invert each piece, it becomes a punch bowl!)
  • Ice cream parlor: Ice cream sundaes, banana splits, and malts, using 50's style glass desert dishes; ice cream in dishes and cones, and of course, those romantic sodas with two straws!
  • Diner: Meat loaf, mashed potatoes and green beans; club sandwich, BLT, sloppy joes, grilled cheese; onion rings; eggs, sausage, and pancakes; coffee, tea, milk, and soda.
  • Beatnik lounge: Coffee, tea, wine, beer, Poor Boy or deli sandwiches, bagels and other baked goods.
  • 50's jazz club: Beer, wine, coffee, sodas, sandwiches, or for true New Orleans flavor, jambalaya, gumbo and pecan pie.
  • Piano bar: Cocktails, peanuts, swanky appetizers.
  • Cocktail party: Cocktails with retro swizzle sticks, Shirley Temple for a non-alcoholic drink, peanuts and after-dinner mints in bowls around the room, party sandwiches (remove the crust, cut in 4 diagonally or lengthwise into "fingers"), pretzels, swanky appetizers.
  • Science fiction retro: Space burgers (hamburgers), sputnik cheese ball, curly fries, martian salad (cole slaw), The Blob (purple jello), Retro Rockets (corn dogs).
  • Retro-futuristic: Moon cheese (a round of cheese),
