Party Wear
Aang Avatar Costume - the coolest outfit to wear to an Airbender party...especially for the birthday boy! The Airbender costume also makes a great gift for birthday, Christmas, or other holidays and occasions. It can be worn as a Halloween and Mardi Gras costume, and is suitable for playtime, too!
Invitations:
- Print invitations on parchment paper to represent a scroll.
- Or print them on parchment paper, with a background image of a map.
- Deckle the edges by folding, dampening the edge of the crease with a sponge, then tearing. This creates a jagged edge. You'll probably want to run your invitations through the printer first, then deckle the edges. Keep the printing a couple of inches from the edge so the water won't cause the ink to run. Practice on some plain paper to get the hang of it before doing this on your printed invitations.
Food:
- Since you probably won't find any blubbered seal jerky, perhaps some regular beef jerky for all the meat-eating Sokka types at your party. Or some other lovely cured meats, or any meats... for those who are soooo hungry!
- A nice fruit plate for vegetarians like Aang, and omnivores like Sokka (who just likes to eat!)
- Yummy party food for vegetarians (and their friends!): vegetable tray with peanut dipping sauce.
- "Jennamite" rock candy. Get sticks of blue and green rock candy.
- Tea: Jasmine tea, or any other hot tea in an oriental style teapot with matching cups.
Activities:
- Online Avatar activities at Nick.com
- Have fun with Yatzee Junior: Avatar the Last Airbender - ages 5+, 2 levels of play.
- Practice Chinese calligraphy. You will need paper, calligraphy felt-tipped pens, printouts of some characters to imitate, and a table to work on.
- Get some air-dry clay, and each guest makes a Wooden Hog-Monkey. Paint them with Tempera paint (brown for the body, red for the eyes--or use red marker or glue on small red acrylic jewels!)
- Tea ceremony - get an oriental teapot and matching cups, and take some time out for a nice cup of tea.
Decorations:
Use the symbol for Air and Airbending, a triple spiral, in creating wall decorations and table decor. See our free Airbender printouts!- Print and display the calligraphy characters for each nation. Print them large for wall display, or small for table decorations. You could even make very small printouts and cut them out to use as table confetti.
- In decorating, use the colors that represent each nation: blue for water, yellow-green for earth, red for fire, and white for air. For example, you could use a blue tablecover, yellow-green plastic eating utensils, white cups, and red napkins. You could also use the colors in balloons, streamers, table confetti, cake decorations, etc.
- A full yellow moon, as seen during the solstice. Cut a large circle out of yellow poster board and attach to the wall. To help you draw the circle, first measure to find the center of the width of the poster board. and mark it lightly in pencil. Next, take a piece of string, tie one end to a pin or toothpick and the other end to a pencil, relatively near the tip. Once tied, place the pin or toothpick in the center of the poster board, and make sure the pencil does not go beyond the poster board at any point. If it does, the string is too long. Tie it a little shorter, test again, then when the length of the string is correct, keep the pencil vertical, and draw the circle!

The four relics Aang chose which demonstrated he was the Avatar:
- Clay turtle flute (ocarina) - represents water.
- String-powered propeller - represents Air. (We couldn't find anything resembling Aang's toy; if you know someone who does woodworking, they may be able to fashion one for you. Or you could substitute Aang's battle staff; although it is much larger, it is the most similar in design.)
- Wooden Hog-Monkey - represents earth. (We couldn't find any of these either, but it might be a fun activity to make some out of clay!)
- Wooden hand drum - represents fire. If you get a plain one, you could put the symbol on it with paint or markers.
